Warning on land supply as housing density falls
There will need to be a 67% increase in the amount of land available for new housing if the Government is to meet its housing target of 240,000 new homes a year, according to new research. Housing research business Hometrack says that developers are cutting output of flats in favour of building larger homes.

Gordon Brown to bulldoze rural housing curbs
GORDON BROWN is preparing to sweep aside planning controls in villages and market towns to allow the biggest rural house building programme for a generation. Local authorities are to be controversially ordered to adopt a relaxed approach to the building of new homes in areas where planning permission has traditionally been refused. The Government has concluded that protecting the environment, should no longer be the overriding consideration when decisions are made about whether to allow development in areas.

West Midlands considers higher housing growth
Government appointed consultants have proposed building up to 80,000 more homes than is allocated in the West Midlands draft Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS). Planning consultants Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners’ (NLP) long awaited report on the region’s capacity for additional housing is released today. It presents three potential growth scenarios, which propose adding between 417,000 and 445,600 housing units by 2026.
