Brown's economist calls for homes and shops to be built on the Greenbelt
Property developers were given the go-ahead yesterday to build on the Greenbelt, with radical proposals to speed up the construction of homes and shops. Kate Barker, the economist commissioned by Gordon Brown to address planning delays, called for an urgent review of Greenbelt boundaries. She suggested that some of it could meet housing needs. Ms Barker also proposed giving the go-ahead for more supermarkets and shopping malls, both in town centres and on their outskirts. She made it clear that the market, rather than councils, should dictate development.

More homes are planned to be built across the country - but could they end up on Greenbelt land? The Greenbelts that have protected the countryside for more than 50 years should be built on, a Whitehall report said yesterday. Developers who have been kept at bay by strict laws must be allowed to build thousands of homes around towns and cities.

Number of new homes being built at highest level for two years
The number of new homes being built in England rose to its highest level for nearly two years during the first quarter of 2010, figures showed today.

Around 24,930 properties were started in the three months to the end of March, a level last seen during the second quarter of 2008, according to Communities and Local Government.
